Than Htay

​

Born in Bahan Township, Yangon, in 1958, Than Htay discovered his passion for painting during his middle school years. What began as an early interest gradually grew into a lifelong artistic pursuit, leading him to Japan in 1989 to paint and exhibit his work.

His time in Japan marked an important chapter in his artistic journey. In 1992, he participated in the Urayasu Township Exhibition in Chiba, where his work received three awards: second prize, third prize, and the Mayor’s Prize. He continued to develop his artistic practice in Japan, exhibiting his work at Ganza, Tokyo, between 1998 and 2003.

From 1996 to 2004, Than Htay participated in the Seiko Ten International Art Exhibition at the Tokyo Museum with the Japan International Artists Club (J.I.A.C.), receiving awards for Best Painting and Best Technique. His involvement with the Artist Friendship Association of Asia from 1996 to 2013 further expanded his international connections, providing opportunities to exhibit his work at the National Museum of China in Beijing and the National Museum of Korea.

Over the years, Than Htay has built an extensive exhibition history, participating in more than 60 group exhibitions and 20 solo exhibitions locally and internationally. His works have been exhibited in Japan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Korea, and the United States. Two of his works are also part of the Obama Foundation Collection, marking a notable achievement in his artistic career.

Today, Than Htay lives and works in Chiang Mai, Thailand, continuing his artistic journey across borders. His collection can be viewed at Nawaday Tharlar Gallery, offering audiences an opportunity to discover the work of an artist whose dedication to painting has taken him from Yangon to the international art scene.
