Than Htay was born in Bahan Township, Yangon in 1958. He first started painting in middle school. His passion for art developed to the point where in 1989 he went to Japan to paint and exhibit his work. In 1992 he had the opportunity to be part of the Urayasu Township Exhibition in Chiba district, Japan, where he won second prize, third prize and mayor’s prize. After that he continued to stay in Japan and during 1998 – 2003 he displayed his work in ‘One Man Show’, Ganza Tokyo.

Between 1996 and 2004 he had the chance to display his work at an International Art Exhibition in Tokyo Museum (Seiko Ten Exhibition) with The Japan International Artists Club (J.I.A.C). At this exhibition he won a prize for best painting and best technique.

Between 1996 – 2013 he became part of the Artist Friendship Association of Asia, together with this organization he was also able travel to show his work internationally at Peking China National Museum and Korea National Museum. His work has been shown in more than 60 group exhibits and 20 solo exhibits locally and internationally in Japan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Peking, Singapore, Korea and US.
